A newcomer’s spontaneous translanguaging in lower-secondary physics education

Research indicates that encouraging translanguaging can enhance learning in a range of contexts. However, there are few studies examining for among newcomers science education. This case study fills this research gap by what ways newcomer to the school uses practices with his classmate participate more fully linguistically diverse physics classroom, where neither teacher nor majority students share same home language. The data comprises transcriptions video and audio recordings photographs from nine lessons (students aged 14–15 years). Translanguaging practicesFootnote1 were identified analyzed sociocultural perspective. Benito, newcomer, spontaneously used English, Swedish, Spanish Portuguese prior knowledge creative interactions during pair work, something was not possible whole class instruction. Multilingual peer dialogue, multilingual private speech use artifacts increased opportunities. Moreover, Benito Edin engaged exploratory talk demonstrated metalinguistic awareness. teachers who actively facilitate students' multiple linguistic resources sensemaking contribute egalitarian education increase opportunities classrooms.
